PBGVCA CHIC DNA Repository

CHIC (Canine Health Information Center)

The CHIC DNA Repository, co-sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the AKC Canine Health Foundation (AKC CHF), collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding pedigree and health history information to facilitate future research and testing aimed at reducing the incidence of inherited disease in dogs. The program objectives are:

  • Facilitate more rapid research progress by expediting the sample collection process
  • Provide researchers with optimized family groups needed for research
  • Allow breeders to take advantage of future DNA based disease tests as they become available
  • Foster a team environment between breeders/owners and the research community improving the likelihood of genetic discovery

New Short-Form Health Survey

IMPORTANT

Please read ALL info below, BEFORE filling in the 2-page health form.

The PBGVCA Health Committee and the PBGV Health and Rescue Foundation needs the help from all PBGV owners in identifying health issues most common in the breed. In order to make decisions about what sort of research to support, the Committee must know what conditions are most common in PBGVs. Although the online health survey remains an important instrument for collecting health information, concerns have been raised about the length and complexity of this survey.

The Health Survey Committee is attempting to address these concerns with an abbreviated, simplified form that will provide the Committee with a quick 'snapshot' of health concerns within the breed. In order to be effective, it is important that a survey be completed for each PBGV owned. It is just as important to know that an individual dog is healthy as it is to catalog health problems. This survey has been made as short and simple as possible to insure maximum participation. A good response also may serve as an external control on the validity of the online survey.

The survey responses will be tabulated by members of the Survey Committee and will be considered confidential. The Committee encourages PBGV owners to provide as much information about their dogs and their health. It is through the sharing of information that PBGV owners can make the most strides in dealing with threats to the health and welfare of our breed. However, if anyone has a reluctance to share information about a dog, just submit the information anonymously by identifying each dog as male 1, male 2, female 1 etc. The critical need is the Committee receives survey responses on as many PBGVs as possible.

About this Survey

The PBGV is a rugged, happy hound who fits well into a variety of human lifestyles. Today's PBGV can be a beautiful show dog, a hard working agility, obedience or hunting dog and a devoted house dog. Despite their general good health, we need to be sure we guard the future of our breed too. To do this we developed our PBGV-Comprehensive Breed Health Survey that provides us with a picture of the overall well being of PBGVs around the world.

The Survey, funded by the PBGVHRF allows you to retrieve and update your PBGVs' health records whenever something changes, or you've completed a health, screening test. You enter your PBGV's individual information once and then you can add new information without redoing the initial part. All of your dogs are linked to you through your password protected user ID. When you enter your PBGV's health information, you help us learn what problems affect our breed most often and if there are regions or countries where certain conditions are more common.

The data is entirely confidential. No one sees your dogs' information except you and our independent data management firm. All identifying information is taken out of summary reports before it is given to our project veterinarian advisor, Dr James Wright from Auburn University. Dr. Wright will receive the health information as a group of numbers that he then will analyze in an annual summary report.

All PBGV owners are encouraged to participate. You don't have to be a member of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of America to participate. Every PBGV is important, no matter if your dog is a family companion, or a show or breeding dog. To enter one dog for the first time takes about 20 minutes. If your PBGV was alive on, or born after January 1 2001, take a few minutes and enter their information.
